● What is a modified game?
Developmentally appropriate
1. Primary rules
● List the strategies for modification
1. Make scoring easier
Basketball: Lower the basketball hoops
Soccer: Use larger goals
Use shorter rackets with larger heads to allow for more control
Friendly pitchers in softball , softer and larger ball tend to increase scoring
- All increase use of techniques and tactics for scoring
2. Slow the movement of the ball
Slow pace of games helps develop game sense
Gives students more time to react and move
Learn how to anticipate movement of objects, teammates, and opponents
Use balls that are larger or lighter than regulation equipment
3. Increase opportunities to practice techniques and tactics
Reduce team size
Practice successful repetitions in relevant context will allow students to be more successful
Small sided games help students learn techniques and tactics more quickly
Friendly guarding when beginning to learn a sport
4. Sequence games to enable the learning of tactics
Invasion games requires complex tactics
Start with a series of small sided games and progress to larger games
Introduce more concepts as games get bigger
Field length should be large relative to number of players
Can be made smaller as students develop game sense
- Altering spaces can make some tactics more appropriate than others (e.g. a longer, narrower space)
5. Change Rules that Define Scoring
Differential scoring- used to emphasize the usage of certain techniques and tactics
Give more points for what teachers want students to focus on.
- Negative points are used to take away teams total points
- Provide game modifications to different sports
